Thirty-four years after "The Karate Kid" hit theaters in 1984, the film's stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are reprising their roles as rivals Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence for the new YouTube Red series "Cobra Kai."Macchio and Zabka appeared on the "Today" show Wednesday to talk about the new series, and the legacy that "Karate Kid" cemented within pop culture history."It's always easier, or it felt more right, to let the legacy stand on its own," Macchio said regarding his initial hesitation about reprising his breakout role. But the now-56-year-old commended the "Cobra Kai" writers and producers for how they handled the new storylines. "It was just smart, and it was right," he said.Zabka, 52, said it took very little convincing to get him on board. He was game from the start."I knew we were going to do this from the day we wrapped 'The Karate Kid' 34 years ago," he joked. "It was amazing to step back into the character and the guys... really found a great entry point into him and showing him broken down after all of these years.""Today" host Savannah Guthrie then questioned the title of the new series, which is named after Zabka's character Johnny Lawrence's old karate dojo. "I feel like that's rise of Johnny," she said. "'Cobra Kai' has become a brand just based on pop culture and the relevance of the 'Karate Kid' film, so it's kind of a nice way in," Macchio explained.
