ABC cancels 'Roseanne' after star's 'abhorrent' tweet
ABC has canceled "Roseanne" after its star, Roseanne Barr, tweeted a racist message about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett Tuesday morning. The tweet sparked outrage online, with viewers and celebrities alike calling on ABC to take action.“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.Bob Iger, the Chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, the parent company of ABC tweeted out Dungey's statement, and added, "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing."Later in the evening, Barr tweeted again saying, "Don't feel sorry for me, guys!!-I just want to apologize to the hundreds of people, and wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet. I will be on Joe Rogan's podcast friday."Barr's talent agency, ICM Partners, dropped her as a client following her tweets."What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency," the agency said in a statement. "Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client."Barr apologized and said she’s leaving Twitter after she tweeted a racist comment about Jarrett. Though the tweet appears to have been deleted, Politico reported that it read, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Speaking to MSNBC Tuesday, Jarrett said Barr's racist tweet should be turned into a "teaching moment.""I’m fine. I’m worried about all the people out there who don’t have a circle of friends and followers who come right to their defense," Jarrett said. " The person who is walking down the street minding their own business and they see somebody cling to their purse or want to cross the street or every black parent I know who has a boy who has to sit down and have a conversation the talk as we call it. And as you say those ordinary examples of racism that happen every single day and that is why I’m so glad to be here this evening talking with you."Consulting producer Wanda Sykes had tweeted she would not return for the second season, and star Sara Gilbert, who played Darlene, spoke out against Barr's tweet. "Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show," she wrote. "I am disappointed in her actions to say the least."
