Craigslist is a haven for the car-obsessed. The site's car buying and selling section is a simple, easy way to find cool cars for sale or sell a car without fuss. In the 20-plus years of the site's existence, the service has been free, whether you were buying or selling a car, truck or anything else.
Well, that has officially changed. Starting Monday, April 15, Craigslist is now implementing a $5 fee to list a car or truck for sale.
The news comes from Craigslist's listing page. If you go to list a car or truck by owner, a message on the side of the selection box reads "please note - $5 fee per ad starting April 15." The news first appeared on Reddit, and Brian Silvestro, from Road and Track , was able to find the message himself when going through the listing process.
Road and Track reached out to Craigslist to find out exactly why it's implementing a fee for owners selling cars after all this time but did not receive a response by time of publishing. No official announcement has been given, though if you frequent the used car classifieds, you can probably think of a few reasons. Spam listings and shady ads often pepper search results, making it hard for people to actually find what they're looking for. People will sometimes even repost an ad daily to ensure it's always at the top of search results. And while Craigslist might seem like a simple webpage, it still takes people and servers to run, and that costs money.
If you're a dealer, this fee isn't exactly new. Listing anything in the "by dealer" section, including job postings, real estate, apartments for rent and event tickets, have had mandatory fees.
Now, when it comes to listing cars, private parties will have to fork up cash, too.
