Travel troubles: See how flight cancellations have left travelers across the US stranded
FROM BWI THURGOOD MARSHALL AIRPORT. KHIREE: MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS WE HAVE BEEN HEARING HAVE BEEN COMING FROM SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CUSTOMERS. A LONG LINE OUTSIDE OF THEIR TICKET AREA ON MONDAY. HAS GOTTEN BETTER BUT NOW MANY PASSENGERS SAY THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING OTHER ISSUES. LONG LINES AND CANCELED FLIGHTS CAUSE HEADACHES FOR TRAVELERS ON TUESDAY. ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THE COMPANY CANCELED MORE THAN 70% OF FLIGHTS ON MONDAY AND MORE THAN 60% ON TUESDAY. >> MY CONNECTION FLIGHT TO DURHAM WAS CANCELED. IT WAS RESCHEDULED FOR THIS MORNING BUT THE FLIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELED. MY TWO RETURNING FLIGHTS HAVE BEEN CANCELED FOR FRIDAY AND NOW I’M STUCK IN A LOOPHOLE, TRYING TO FIND OUT WHERE MY BAGS ARE. KHIREE: SEVERAL SOUTHWEST CUSTOMERS SAID THEY WAITED IN LINE FOR HOURS TO TRY TO GET THEIR BAGS AFTER THEIR FLIGHTS WERE CANCELED. AND THAT ALONE IS KEEPING PEOPLE FROM LEAVING THE AIRPORT, EVEN IF THEY FOUND OTHER WAYS TO GET TO THEIR DESTINATION. >> WE WERE ABLE TO GET REFUNDED MOST OF OUR STUFF AND SOUTHWEST HAS GIVEN US VOUCHERS BUT AT THIS POINT WE NEED OUR BAGS. WE HAVE IMPORTANT BELONGINGS IN THERE. KHIREE: SOUTHWEST WARNED THEY WOULD OPERATE JUST OVER A THIRD OF ITS USUAL SCHEDULE TO ALLOW CREWS TO GET BACK TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. THE ISSUES PROMPTED THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO INVESTIGATE, TWEETING IT IS CONCERNED ABOUT SOUTHWEST ON ACCEPTABLE RATE OF CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS ALONG WITH REPORTS OF LACK OF PROMPT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILL EXAMINE WHETHER IT WAS CONTROLLABLE. EITHER WAY, SOME PEOPLE ARE UPSET BECAUSE THEY CANNOT GET THEIR HOLIDAY TIME BACK. >> JUST TRY TO DEAL WITH THAT AS IT COMES. THINGS COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE THOUGH, THEY REALLY COULD. KHIREE: I REACHED OUT TO SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND THEY TOLD ME THEY’VE BEEN HAVING ISSUES CONNECTING FLIGHT CREWS TO AIRCRAFT. THEY ALSO SAID THEY ARE WORKING TO RECONNECT PASSENGERS WITH THEIR LUGGAGE.
