Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered to pay higher restitution payments
Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has been ordered to pay more in restitution this month.
This comes after Nagin had been fighting his restitution payments in October of last year.
Nagin said last year that he was living "paycheck to paycheck" in the Dallas area, even though court records show he's taking in more than $12,000 a month, and more than $151,000 a year.
The financial records were released as the federal government says Nagin should be making higher restitution payments to the IRS – a total of $72,000.
The Democrat, who served two terms as mayor from 2002-2010, was convicted of bribery in 2014. Part of his conviction required jail and restitution.
The feds say Nagin has been making $500 payments since he was released from jail in 2020. They want him to pay $2,700 a month.
New court documents show that Ragin has been ordered to pay $1,200 a month in restitution.
Nagin's income comes from social security since he's now 66 years old, as well as a hefty pension from the city of New Orleans and COX communications, where he served as CEO.
Nagin is acting as his own lawyer and is fighting any enhanced payment.
Judge Jane Triche Milazzo made the ruling on Thursday.
