New Orleans mayor will not seek suspension for OPCD executive director

New Orleans mayor will not seek suspension for OPCD executive director
ALL RIGHT. BREAKING NEWS, MAYOR LATOYA CANTRELL SAYS SHE WILL NOT BE TAKING THE SUGGESTION FROM CITY COUNCIL LEADERS WHO REQUESTED THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ORLEANS PARISH COMMUNICATION DISTRICT, TYREE MORRIS, TO BE SUSPENDED. THE DECISION COMES AFTER ALLEGATIONS WERE BROUGHT TO LIGHT IN A WDSU INVESTIGATION. WDSU INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER CASSIE SHERM IS LIVE AT CITY HALL. SO, CASSIE, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE MAYOR TODAY. WELL, DARYL, MAYOR LATOYA CANTRELL AND THE BOARD CHAIR FOR OPCD BOTH SAY THAT TYRELL MORRIS WILL CONTINUE ON IN HIS POSITION THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS THEY WILL TRANSITION HIM OUT EVENTUALLY. AND THEY SAY HE GAVE PLENTY OF TIME FOR HIS RESIGNATION. SO THEY CONTINUE TO KEEP HIM ON BOARD. NOW THAT COMES IN DESPITE OF WHAT THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE SUGGESTED AND RECOMMENDED TO THE CITY. AND SO THIS IS WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR, IS THIS COMES AFTER OUR INVESTIGATION. SO THIS COMES AFTER WDSU INVESTIGATES AND COVERED TYRELL MORRIS IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL FOR A CAR CRASH BACK IN MAY. AND ACCUSATIONS OF ALTERED PUBLIC DOCUMENTS. I RECEIVED DOCUMENTS FROM OPCD IN A 2021 AUDIT, BOTH ARE THE SAME EXACT DOCUMENTS WITH THE SAME DATE AND TITLE, BUT THE ONE I RECEIVED FROM OPCD HAS FOUR ADDED WORDS, AND THAT’S WHAT LED TO THE INVESTIGATION. THOSE ADDED WORDS. IF INJURIES ARE REPORTED AND THIS IS IN REGARDS TO IF A PERSON HAS HAS TO HAVE A DRUG OR ALCOHOL TEST AFTER AN ACCIDENT. NOW, MORRIS TOLD ME NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE CRASH, SO HE DIDN’T TAKE A TEST WHEN INVOLVED IN THAT CRASH. I LOOKED INTO THE METADATA, THE DOCUMENT OPCD GAVE ME, WHICH SHOWS TERELLE MORRIS WAS THE LAST TO MODIFY THE POLICY REGARDING TO OPCD VEHICLES IN THE TIMESTAMP ON THAT, 17 MINUTES AFTER I SENT AN EMAIL TO MORRIS ASKING ABOUT THE CRASH, HE WAS INVOLVED IN BACK IN MAY IN HIS OPCD VEHICLE. NOW, DUE TO THESE FINDINGS, CITY COUNCIL LEADERS REQUESTED THE OPCD BOARD TO SUSPEND TYRELL UNTIL THE INVESTIGATION IS OVER, AND THE MAYOR DISAGREES. TYRELL MORRIS, DIRECTOR OF OPCD, IS A VITAL PART OF OUR PUBLIC SAFETY TEAM. AS HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS. AS I’VE BEEN MAYOR. AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO ENGAGE HIM AS OUR DIRECTOR. HE RENDERED OR TENDERED HIS RESIGNATION, GAVE A GREAT LEAD TIME. I THANK HIM SO MUCH FOR THAT BECAUSE TRANSITION DOES MATTER, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY. TOP PRIORITY CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. NOW, MORRIS PUT IN HIS RESIGNATION ON MONDAY OF THIS WEEK. THIS COMES AS THAT INVESTIGATION IS STILL UNDERWAY AND HE HAS GIVEN HIS LAST DAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH. AND GUYS, WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS STORY REPORTING HERE AT CITY HALL. I’M CASSIE. SHERM, BACK TO YOU. CASSIE SHERMAN WITH THE LATEST. CASSIE, THANK
