Full interview: Nebraska Secretary of the State Robert Evnen
Sir. Thank you for your time today. Very glad to be with you. Uh Let's talk about the fight against election fraud. Some of your colleagues now have pivoted and it's *** fight over detecting election fraud. And I'm speaking about Eric, this electronic registration Information center. Some states are part of it to share voter registration data so that it prevents fraud or double voting or people registered in more than one state. Your state is not in *** why not the concept of sharing data across states in order to minimize the occurrence of multiple registrations. It's *** really good idea. It's *** really good concept. There were some issues and problems that came up with Eric. There are *** number of states that have now withdrawn from *** and so we're looking for other alternatives now. Uh that will help us along the same lines that that Eric would have done. So you're not considering joining Eric, you're looking for some other avenue to be able to compare voter registration data with other states. Yes. Ok. Uh Do you have *** timeline on that? We do not uh we do not have *** timeline on that. We're watching what other states are doing and uh keeping *** close eye on it. Great. Let me uh ask you about something else that has been *** topic at NAS conferences which is misinformation and disinformation. I want to talk about the new frontier, perhaps in disinformation, artificial intelligence, deep fakes, right? *** I, are you worried about *** I, deep fakes being used to fool voters in your state? *** I is something that can be very useful in terms of providing information to voters, but it can also be very damaging and destructive. And so we're trying to keep an eye on that. It is certainly *** subject of concern. Is there any uh thing that you're doing specifically about it or you are waiting to see how it develops? Well, we're waiting to see we're watching it. Uh And we're watching how it develops and also the antidote to, as you say, deep fakes and the like another topic that has come up about election workers, the Brennan Center for Justice in April released survey results that found about one in five election workers, 20% told them they plan to quit before next year's presidential election. That's the equivalent they said to 1 to 2 election workers quitting per day every day since the 2020 presidential election, which saw unprecedented threats, disinformation COVID. Are you expecting higher than normal turnover of election workers in your state? We actually have already turned over our election workers to *** new generation. We did that in the midst of COVID. In COVID, our numbers of early voters versus voting at the polls almost switched. But we, we opened all of our polls in the May primary in 2020. We opened all of our polling places on time. Every single one of them. We kept them open all day. We kept our poll workers safe and we kept our voters safe. But the thing that we did in order to keep the poll staff properly is we went on *** campaign to recruit new poll workers and we asked Nebraskans to step up to this responsibility. We asked younger Nebraskans to do it since many poll workers are older and they had concerns about COVID and COVID exposure. And the thing that is very beautiful is that Nebraskans responded. So we have *** whole new group of people that we have drawn upon uh to help us maintain our poll worker numbers. What is your top priority that you're looking at for the next statewide election? Well, the top priority is always to uh assure that the elections are conducted in *** fair and secure manner and we are continuing our efforts to do that as we have in the past. Mr Secretary. Thank you so much for your time. It's my pleasure. Thank you.
