Krewe of Excalibur names first Black king in parade history
The Krewe of Excalibur is usually one of the first krewes to roll in Jefferson Parish.
This year, they have a big first within their krewe.
Matthew Brown Sr. got his first look at his wardrobe as he reigns as King of Excalibur.
Brown is the first Black king for the krewe in its 22-year history.
He is a dean at Martin Behrman Charter School in Algiers and a dedicated football coach and educator.
"I think my passion is giving back and mentoring and being somebody that the kids can look up to," said Brown.
Brown's passion and energy caught the eye of Excalibur's captain.
"We want somebody that's dynamic, has a lot of energy, has a passion for Mardi Gras, and understands the role they're gonna play. Matthew exactly fits that bill," said Melissa Hildreth, the captain of Excalibur.
Once Brown found out he would be king, the St. Augustine High School alum had a major request.
"If we're gonna do this, we have to figure out a way to get St. Aug to march at the front of my float," said Brown.
Brown is a New Orleans man through and through, and it shows in his crown.
"It's purple and gold, a shoutout to the city," said Brown.
The historic moment is a family affair for Brown and his son.
White Brown Jr. is proud of his father; it is also a moment to remember the ones no longer with us.
Brown Sr.'s parents died five months apart in 2022. He said he knows they would be proud of him.
