Governor Jeff Landry is requesting more help from the federal government for Louisiana crawfish farmers.
Landry sent a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Wednesday.
The Louisiana governor is looking to address the recent drought conditions and the impacts on the domestic crawfish industry. One of those impacts is high prices for consumers.
Landry said his request would expand the already existing Emergency Livestock Assistance Program. However, now the program will include drought as a cause of loss for farm-raised fish (including crawfish).
The governor said it is time the state has farmer's and fishermen's back as they have helped bolster our economy for centuries. He hopes his request for federal aid will give much-needed relief to the struggling communities and industries.
