Gretna, Slidell preparing to kick off St. Patrick's Day parade season
FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT TOMORROW, THEN YOU MIGHT WANT TO HEAD OUT TO THE WEST BANK, GRETNA IS IRISH ITALIAN PARADE WILL ROLL FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. SO WE TALKED TO THE PARADE CHAIRMAN ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO TOMORROW. THIS YEAR WE HAVE 40 FLOATS, 15 BANDS, MANY MARCHING GROUPS. UH, THE IT’S THE BIGGEST PARADE ON THE WEST BANK THAT WE’VE EVER HAD. AND WE’RE EXCITED. GROWING IN SIZE EACH YEAR. GRETNA’S IRISH ITALIAN PARADE CHAIRMAN PAUL LEHMAN SAYS THEY’LL HAVE CLOSE TO 1000 RIDERS THIS WEEKEND. WE’RE JUST LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING THE PEOPLE OUT THERE AND ENJOYING THEMSELVES. THE FLOATS ARE LINED UP AND READY TO GO AT MILLER PARK AHEAD OF THE PARADE THAT ROSE SUNDAY AT NOON, STARTING AT BURMASTER STREET AND FRANKLIN AVENUE, PROVIDING PARADE GOERS AN INTIMATE EXPERIENCE LIKE IN THE 60S AND 70S. BACK IN THE DAY WHEN PARADES WERE REALLY SMALL AND YOU USED TO HAVE THAT HOMETOWN FEELING, THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WITH THE CITY OF GRETNA, WE’RE TOLD THERE WILL BE SEVERAL BLOCK PARTIES IN AN AFTER PARTY, AND OF COURSE, PLENTY OF THROWS BESIDES CABBAGE. BESIDES 1000 SACKS OF CABBAGE. WE’RE GOING TO BE THROWING. WE HAVE SPECIALTY T SHIRTS TO THROW. WE HAVE SEASONING TO GO WITH ALL THE VEGGIES AND CABBAGE AND EVERYTHING ELSE WE HAVE OUT THERE. ALL RIGHT, LOTS OF FUN THERE. THE GRETNA ITALIAN IRISH PARADE WILL BEGIN AT NOON. IT’S GOING TO BE ON SUNDAY AT BURMASTER AND FRANKLIN STREETS. IT ENDS AT FOURTH STREET AND HUEY P. Two southeast Louisiana parishes are preparing for St. Patrick's Day parades this weekend. The Olde Towne Slidell St. Patrick's Day parade will roll Sunday afternoon. This year's parade will be the 49th year. A special guest is reigning as duke, Slidell Police Department's own Daniel Seuzeneau. The Slidell Police Department will also be throwing their highly sought-after St. Patrick's Day rubber ducks. The parade begins at 1 p.m. Gretna will also host its second-annual Italian-Irish parade Sunday at 12 p.m. This year, Gretna's parade has grown to have more than 40 floats and more than 1,000 riders. The parade is the biggest parade on the Westbank. Throws include T-shirts, fresh produce, lots of cabbage, and seasonings. The WDSU Parade Tracker is tracking both parades.
