WILLIAMS, WDSU NEWS COURTNEY, THANK YOU FOR THAT. ALSO NEW AT FOUR. NEW DETAILS ABOUT THE OVERDOSE OF A SOUTHEASTERN STUDENT IN HAMMOND. WITH THREE PEOPLE NOW ARRESTED, THE HAMMOND POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT’S ALL PART OF A NEW INITIATIVE TO CRACK DOWN ON ILLEGAL DRUG DISTRIBUTION AND OVERDOSES. WDSU REPORTER ARIEL BRUMFIELD JOINS US LIVE FROM HAMMOND AND HAS SOME NEW INFORMATION. ARIEL. WELL, YOU GUYS, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT STUDENT WHO OVERDOSED, THEY ADMINISTERED NARCAN TO HER, AND SHE’S NOW DOING WELL. AND WE’RE TOLD SHE SHE’S DOING THIS NOW. EARLIER TODAY, CHIEF EDWIN BERGERON, FOR HAMMOND POLICE. HE SAYS THAT THEY ARRESTED THREE PEOPLE WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OVERDOSE. THAT HAPPENED IN MID JANUARY. THOSE THREE PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY. THAT’S 50 YEAR OLD KAWASH BROWN, 29 YEAR OLD SHAHEEN PINES AND 21 YEAR OLD MARK FRIDGE. THE THIRD, WHO POLICE SAY IS ACTUALLY THE PERSON WHO DISTRIBUTED THE DRUGS TO THE STUDENT. NOW, FRIDGE FACES CHARGES OF DISTRIBUTION OF HEROIN AND TRESPASSING ON THE CAMPUS OF SLU. HE IS ACCUSED OF BUYING THE HEROIN THAT HE GAVE THE STUDENT FROM PINES. A SEARCH WARRANT WAS EXECUTED AT BROWN’S HOUSE AND POLICE SEIZED NUMEROUS AMOUNTS OF DRUGS AS WELL AS THREE GUNS. CHIEF BERGERON SAYS THE ARREST WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE NEW FENTANYL OVERDOSE RESPONSE TEAM. THE TEAM IS WORKING TO INVESTIGATE DRUG POISONINGS, BOTH FATAL AND NON-FATAL, AND BRING BETTER PROSECUTION AND EVEN HOMICIDE CHARGES AGAINST THOSE DRUG DISTRIBUTORS. AS WE’VE CHARGED PEOPLE FOR A LONG TIME WITH THE NARCOTICS, THE NEW THING THAT WE’RE STEPPING UP IS WE’RE GOING TO CHARGE THESE CRIMINALS THAT ARE SELLING, HAVING PEOPLE GET POISONED, COME CLOSE TO LOSING THEIR LIVES OR LOSE THEIR LIVES WITH THE ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES. AND WE’RE ALSO TOLD THEY’RE NOW CALL AND GET POISONINGS RATHER THAN OVERDOSES. THEY SAY THAT USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE ARE TAKING FENTANYL, THEY ARE UNAWARE AND DON’T REALIZE IT. The Hammond Police Department has arrested three people in connection with the non-fatal overdose of a Southeastern Louisiana University student. According to police, a female student overdosed in mid-January on campus. Police say the student is now back on campus. Three people were arrested in connection with the overdose. The incident was the first case investigated by The Fentanyl Overdose Response team through the police department. The program's goal is to investigate overdoses, which are now called poisonings, which can be fatal or non-fatal. The team arrested Shyheim Pines, Kawaiishh Brown, and Mark Fridge III. Fridge is accused of distributing the drugs to the student. He faces charges of distribution of heroin and trespassing on the campus of SLU. Fridge is accused of buying the heroin he gave to the student from Pines. A search warrant was executed at Brown's home where numerous drugs including cocaine, marijuana, and heroin were found, according to police. Three guns were also found at the home. Both Brown and Fridge face several drug distribution charges.
