Dangerous Algiers intersection catches attention of New Orleans councilman
Councilman Freddie King is addressing a dangerous intersection in Algiers that is getting attention for scattered debris, excessing speeding, and an increased call for action from neighbors.
King said the intersection of Wall Street and General Degaulle is no stranger to complaints.
"It's not just small fender benders; these cars are being t-boned, the cars are being totaled, airbags are being deployed," said King.
King said he wants the issues in the area to be addressed soon.
"People are being physically injured, cars are being totaled, it's important to the constituents of this community, so it's important to me," said King.
King is suggesting a few possible solutions to fix the dangerous intersection.
"Let me say this: I'm no engineer, but to me, a simple solution would be to cut off this intersection," said King. "Making it to where can't come across four lanes of traffic. Just have people go to the next intersection and make that U-turn or cross at De Gaulle."
Neighbors in the area agree.
Treyionne Deruise frequently travels the area on foot and spoke to WDSU Road Patrol while trying to cross the busy intersection. "See, there we go. If she wasn't paying attention, hit the back of them and right there debris."
King said he hopes to keep conversations going between the city and state officials to resolve the problem intersection.
"We have been working with DOTD and DPW to try to come up with a solution. You know things move slow, there's always a study that needs to be done and some consulting, but to me, the study is 19 accidents in 15 weeks," said King.
