AT THE SANCHEZ CENTER ON APRIL 30TH. DEBRIS STILL SCATTERED ACROSS THE ROADWAY, EXCESSIVE SPEEDING AND INCREASED CALLS FROM NEIGHBORS. ONE COUNCILMAN IN ALGIERS IS BRINGING ATTENTION TO A VERY DANGEROUS WEST BANK INTERSECTION. WDSU TRAFFIC ANCHOR DEJA BROWN HAS MORE. AND IT’S NOT JUST SMALL FENDER BENDERS. THESE CARS ARE BEING T-BONED. THE CARS ARE BEING TOTALED. AIRBAGS ARE BEING DEPLOYED, DEBRIS STILL SCATTERED ACROSS THE ROAD, EXCESSIVE SPEEDS AND A NUMBER OF CALLS FROM NEIGHBORS WANTING ANSWERS ABOUT A DANGEROUS THOROUGHFARE. THE INTERSECTION OF WALL AND GENERAL DE GAULLE. COUNCILMAN FREDDIE KING, THE THIRD, WANTS THE ISSUES IN THIS AREA OF ALGIERS TO BE ADDRESSED SOON. PEOPLE ARE BEING PHYSICALLY INJURED. PEOPLE ARE. CARS ARE BEING TOTALED. SO IT’S IT’S IT’S IMPORTANT TO THE CONSTITUENTS OF THIS, THIS COMMUNITY. SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO ME. HERE’S A SOLUTION. HE SUGGESTS. LET ME SAY THIS. I’M NO ENGINEER FOR NO STREET ENGINEER. BUT TO ME IT WOULD BE A SIMPLE SOLUTION WOULD BE TO CUT OFF THIS INTERSECTION, COULD MAKE IT TO WHERE CARS CAN’T COME ACROSS AND CROSS ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC. JUST HAVE PEOPLE GO TO THE NEXT INTERSECTION AND MAKE THAT THAT U-TURN ACROSS OVER TO GOD AND NEIGHBORS IN THE AREA AGREE. THIS INTERSECTION RIGHT HERE, IT’S PRETTY BAD FOR THOSE WHO TRIES TO PEDESTRIAN ALIKE CALL AND PEDESTRIAN ALIKE. IT’S NOT A GOOD AREA RIGHT HERE. OUR CREW CAUGHT UP WITH TRAYON, WHO FREQUENTLY TRAVELS THE AREA ON FOOT ATTEMPTING TO CROSS THE BUSY INTERSECTION. EVERYBODY TRYING TO RUSH ACROSS GET TO WHERE THEY’RE GOING. THERE WE GO. LOOK AT THAT. JUST IF SHE WASN’T PAYING ATTENTION, IF SHE WAS LOOKING AND DRIVING, SHE COULD HAVE HIT THE BACK OF HIM AND THEN RIGHT THERE. DEBRIS. COUNCILMAN KING SAYS HE HOPES CONTINUED CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN THE CITY AND STATE OFFICIALS WILL LEAD TO A RESOLVE. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH DOTD AND DPW, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TO TO TRY TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION. YOU KNOW, THINGS MOVE SLOW. AS ALWAYS, A STUDY NEED TO BE DONE AND SOME CONSULTING. King said the intersection of Wall Street and General Degaulle is no stranger to complaints. "People are being physically injured, cars are being totaled, it's important to the constituents of this community, so it's important to me," said King. King is suggesting a few possible solutions to fix the dangerous intersection. "Let me say this: I'm no engineer, but to me, a simple solution would be to cut off this intersection," said King. "Making it to where can't come across four lanes of traffic. Just have people go to the next intersection and make that U-turn or cross at De Gaulle."Neighbors in the area agree. Treyionne Deruise frequently travels the area on foot and spoke to WDSU Road Patrol while trying to cross the busy intersection. "See, there we go. If she wasn't paying attention, hit the back of them and right there debris." King said he hopes to keep conversations going between the city and state officials to resolve the problem intersection. "We have been working with DOTD and DPW to try to come up with a solution. You know things move slow, there's always a study that needs to be done and some consulting, but to me, the study is 19 accidents in 15 weeks," said King.
