WDSU Editorial: Hiding from the public eye
PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER MIKE NEELY. A GOVERNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE. MAYBE NOT FOR LONG IN THIS STATE SENATE BILL 482 IS MOVING THROUGH THE STATE LEGISLATURE AND IS DESIGNED TO MAKE GOVERNMENT IN LOUISIANA A SECRET PROCESS. IT WOULD MAKE NEARLY EVERY PUBLIC RECORD AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT HIDDEN FROM PUBLIC VIEW. APPARENTLY, SOME OF THE PEOPLE WE’VE ELECTED TO REPRESENT US DO NOT WANT US TO KNOW WHAT THEY’RE WORKING ON, OR WHY. BY UNTIL IT’S DONE AND TOO LATE. WHAT’S NEXT? SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS HELD IN SECRET, CLOSED CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS DECLARING THE STATE CAPITOL OFF LIMITS WHEN THE LEGISLATURE IS IN SESSION. NONE OF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE, BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT SENATE BILL 482 AIMS TO ACCOMPLISH TO CREATE A SECRET GOVERNMENT OUT. WHAT WE NEED IS TRANSPARENCY. WE NEED ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE WITH THE COURAGE AND CHARACTER TO KEEP THE PUBLIC INFORMED. CONTACT YOUR STATE LEGISLATOR TO LET THEM KNOW THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
