CBD business impacted by ongoing construction
Dr. David J. Wallace, the owner of Dream House Lounge, posted a vulnerable video to social media asking for help and explaining how construction that has been in front of his business for the past month is impacting revenue and his livelihood.
"I didn't know what to do. I reached out to my landlord; I'm trying to explain to them what's going on. I'm literally crying myself to sleep at night," Wallace said.
The video went viral, garnering support from the community,
Dream House Lounge, a mental and spiritual wellness lounge, known for promoting healing opened in 2022. Wallace says dealing with the extensive road work has been a challenging journey.
"Everybody's like, what's going on? What is going on outside? People are asking are y'all open. Y'all look like y'all are closed, it's looks crazy out there," Wallace said.
Wallace says this process has impacted his own mental health, preventing him from being able to help others.
"I had to muster up the strength to ask for help, and historically, I saw that as a sign of weakness," Wallace said.
The social media community rallied around Wallace, making donations and tagging the Road Patrol and city departments, hoping to get him some help.
And it worked, when the Road Patrol arrived on the scene, crews were sweeping in front of the business and removing construction debris left behind.
"I was going to make a post and show that something happened over the weekend. Like the energy of community and never underestimate the power of your voice. Never estimate the power of community, and most importantly, never underestimate the power of love."
But was it all for show? After a closer look, we found rusted nails and other debris scattered in front of the door.
Wallace says the crew apologized for the delay in work and assured him the work would be completed soon. He says he hopes they'll follow through.
