A TRULY PREVENTABLE STATISTIC. WE COULD HAVE SAVED ALMOST 400 LIVES IF EVERYONE WOULD WEAR THEIR SEATBELTS LAST YEAR, AND THAT’S A HUGE NUMBER, SO IT’S A BIG DEAL. The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging drivers to buckle up ahead of a national "Click It or Ticket" high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs until June 2, 2024."We want drivers to understand that if you're not wearing a seatbelt, you're in the minority," said Gregory Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. During the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, law enforcement officers will be patrolling and getting the message out to drivers and passengers that buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. "According to our latest observational survey, we know that less than 15 percent of Louisiana drivers and passengers are not wearing their seatbelt. We could've saved almost 400 lives if everyone would've worn their seatbelts last year and that's a huge number, so it's a big deal," Fischer said. The national seat belt use rate in 2023 was 91.9%, which is good — but it can be better. The other 8.1% still need to be reminded that seat belts save lives. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night. One of the focuses of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign is nighttime enforcement. Data shows 57 percent of people killed in night-time traffic crashes in 2022, were not wearing a seat belt. Fischer said that is a truly preventable statistic, so do your part."With added traffic, we want people to just do the simplest thing that they can do for themselves, buckle up," Fischer said.
