WDSU Editorial: Cameras in public
PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER MIKE NEELY. SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS, TRAFFIC CAMERAS, RING CAMERAS, VIDEO RECORDING DEVICES ARE EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK. YOU SHOULD HAVE NO DOUBT THAT YOU ARE ON CAMERA. ANY TIME YOU ARE IN A PUBLIC PLACE LIKE A RESTAURANT, A GOVERNMENT BUILDING, OR WHILE WALKING DOWN THE STREET. THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS HAS HUNDREDS OF THEM WATCHING OVER US 24 OVER SEVEN, AND ALL OF US HAVE A SMARTPHONE PHONE WITH A CAMERA AT THE READY. ALSO 24/7. THIS ISSUE HAS NOW BEEN THRUST INTO THE PUBLIC SPOTLIGHT SINCE THE MAYOR CRIED FOUL AFTER HER PICTURE WAS TAKEN. WHILE EATING ON A BALCONY IN THE FRENCH QUARTER. CONSIDER THIS UNLESS YOU ARE IN A PRIVATE PLACE LIKE YOUR HOME, YOU ARE PROBABLY FAIR GAME TO HAVE YOUR PICTURE TAKEN. SO WHILE THE MAYOR WORKS OUT HER LEGAL COMPLAINT, THERE IS A LESSON FOR ALL OF US. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASSUME YOU ARE BEING VIDEOTAPED, RECORDED, OR PHOTOGRAPHED. WHEN YOU ARE IN A PUBLIC PLACE, IT IS SIMPLY LIFE IN THE 21ST CENTURY AND THE NUMBER OF CAMERAS WATCHING US JUST GETS BIGGER EVE
