France receives Olympic cycling medal – 124 years later. Here's why
Better late than never? France received a silver medal from the Paris Olympics more than a century after it was won.

During its meeting this week in Switzerland, the executive board of the International Olympic Committee approved a change to its historical records to reflect France as the winner of the silver medal in cycling rather than Great Britain.
The medal was won by Lloyd Hildebrand, who competed in two cycling events at the 1900 Paris Olympics and finished second in the men's 25km race.
To compete in the 1900 Olympics, athletes only had to pay an entry fee and send the number of their license, which was established by the national federation where they regularly competed.
Unlike today, National Olympic Committees were not involved in the competition process.
According to the IOC, new research has concluded that although Hildebrand was a British citizen, he was born and raised in France and competed for a French club before and after the 1900 Olympic games.
Based on this information, the IOC's executive board determined that Hildebrand's medal would now be credited to France in the 1900 Paris Olympics and the IOC database.
