*** major shake up in the race for the White House President Joe Biden dropping his bid just one month before his expected nomination at the Democratic National Convention. Biden posted *** statement on x formerly known as Twitter Sunday afternoon saying quote, while it has been my intention to seek re election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term. This comes after facing daily pressure from members within his own party to end his bid amid concerns about his candidacy following *** poor debate performance against former president Donald Trump Biden now backing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee of the party, offering his full support saying, quote, Democrats, it's time to come together and beat Trump. Let's do this. That would be *** historic nomination making Harris the first black woman to lead *** major party presidential ticket Harris saying in *** statement, she's honored to have Biden's endorsement, will work to earn and win this nomination and will do everything in her power to unite the Democratic party and unite our nation.

Shortly after announcing he was ending his 2024 bid for re-election, President Joe Biden tossed his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic party's nominee. And though Biden and some other Democrats are calling for Harris to top the Democratic ticket, it's not a sure thing. Related video above: President Joe Biden will not seek reelection, backs VP Kamala Harris for nominationWhile it's still unclear if anyone will step forward and challenge Harris for the nomination at the Democratic National Convention, there has been speculation as to who else could be nominated or attempt to get the party's nomination.And even if Harris takes the party nomination — she will need a running mate. A number of the possible candidates include governors who either live in a swing state or have strong name recognition across the country. They are:Gov. Andy Beshear of KentuckyThe son of former Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is a lawyer and served as Kentucky's attorney general prior to being elected in 2019.Beshear, who is 46, and his wife, First Lady Britainy Beshear, have two children.Gov. Roy Cooper of North CarolinaRoy Cooper is currently serving in his second term as North Carolina's governor. Prior to holding the position, he was the state's attorney general. Before that, he served in the North Carolina State House and State Senate.Cooper, who is 67, and his wife, North Carolina First Lady Kristen Cooper, have three daughters. Gov. Gavin Newsom of California California Gov. Gavin Newsom previously served as the state's lieutenant governor. Before that, Newsom was mayor of San Fransisco. Newsom, who is 56, is married to California First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom. They have four children.Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker took office in 2019. Prior to serving as governor, Pritzker founded a successful nonprofit tech-focused small business incubator in Chicago. Pritzker, who is 59, and his wife, First Lady MK Pritzker, have a daughter and a son.Gov. Josh Shapiro of PennsylvaniaJosh Shapiro has been Pennsylvania's governor since 2023. Shapiro previously served as the state's attorney general. Before that, he was a county commissioner in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.Shapiro, who is 51, and his wife, First Lady Lori Shapiro, have four children.Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of MichiganGov. Gretchen Whitmer has been Michigan's governor since 2019. A lawyer, Whitmer previously served in both the Michigan House and Senate. Whitmer, who is 52, is married to Dr. Marc Mallory. She has two daughters and three stepsons.Current Democratic governors are not the only potential candidates. Other big names to watch include: Sec. Pete ButtigiegPete Buttigieg, the Biden Administration's U.S. secretary of transportation, previously served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He skyrocketed to notoriety when he unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic Party's nomination for president in 2020.Buttigieg, who is 42, and his husband Chasten have two children. If he were to be named the party's nominee — or if he were to serve as the Democratic nominee's running mate — Buttigieg would be the first openly LGBTQ+ person to hold either position. U.S. Sen. Amy KlobucharSen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota has held her U.S. Senate seat since 2007. Prior to becoming a senator, Klobuchar, who is a lawyer, was a prosecutor in Minnesota. Klobuchar, 64, and her husband, John Bessler, have a daughter. U.S. Sen. Cory BookerSen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who is 55, has held his U.S. Senate seat since 2013. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Booker served on city council and then as mayor in Newark, New Jersey.Former First Lady Michelle ObamaWhile it's unlikely, and while she has — on numerous occasions — said she has no interest in running for president, social media users and others have floated the name of former First Lady Michelle Obama, who is a lawyer and the wife of former President Barack Obama. If Harris earns the party nomination, the aforementioned potentials — with the exception of former First Lady Michelle Obama — would likely be among the potential candidates for her vice presidential running mate.

Shortly after announcing he was ending his 2024 bid for re-election, President Joe Biden tossed his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic party's nominee. And though Biden and some other Democrats are calling for Harris to top the Democratic ticket, it's not a sure thing.

While it's still unclear if anyone will step forward and challenge Harris for the nomination at the Democratic National Convention, there has been speculation as to who else could be nominated or attempt to get the party's nomination.

A number of the possible candidates include governors who either live in a swing state or have strong name recognition across the country. They are:

Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky

The son of former Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is a lawyer and served as Kentucky's attorney general prior to being elected in 2019.
