As Team USA made its way down the Seine during the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, there was one star athlete who wasn't on the boat: Simone Biles. The star gymnast skipped the Opening Ceremony — but for good reason.
"The first competition is Sunday, which is women’s qualifier and of course, she needs to rest up before that competition," her mom, Nellie Biles, said during the Opening Ceremony broadcast on Friday. "She is feeling really good. I spoke to her this morning and she’s doing great."
The gymnastics team has historically skipped the Opening Ceremony. In fact, none of Biles's teammates — Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera — were in attendance. USA Gymnastics CEO Li Li Leung said earlier this year that they discourage their athletes from attending, because they will "be on their feet for nine hours."
Unlike at the Tokyo Olympics, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, Biles will have her family in Paris with her — including her husband, Jonathan Owens, who was excused from NFL training camp, and her parents, Nellie and Ronald Biles.
"I think it’s going to be just like Rio, having family there to support whatever we need, but really just having fun, embracing that moment, making those memories," Biles said. "I’m excited that I get to do it with my family."
Biles's first competition is on Sunday, July 28, in the team qualifying events. They begin at 3:30 a.m. ET.
