Helicopter footage shows firefighters rescue two people trapped by tree on California river
WE’RE FOLLOWING SOME BREAKING NEWS RIGHT NOW IN SACRAMENTO ON THE AMERICAN RIVER, RIGHT NEAR WATT AVENUE, AND CLOSE TO LA RIVIERA DRIVE, LIVECOPTER3 OVER THE SCENE OF WHERE THEY’RE TRYING TO RESCUE TWO PEOPLE WHO ARE STRANDED IN A TREE. YOU CAN SEE THEY HAVE SOME SORT OF A A RAFT THERE, BUT THEY’RE REALLY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET THESE TWO PEOPLE OUT OF THE WATER, OUT OF THOSE TREES, AND GET THEM TO SHORE SAFELY. OBVIOUSLY, DURING THIS TIME WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE REALLY HOT, PEOPLE LIKE TO GO TO THE WATERWAYS TO ESCAPE THE HEAT, BEAT THE HEAT AND COOL OFF. BUT OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN WARNING PEOPLE FOR MONTHS THAT THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. SO WE DON’T KNOW THE SITUATION EXACTLY. ALL THE DETAILS SURROUNDING THE SITUATION. BUT WE DO KNOW THAT THAT WATER RESCUE IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW FOR TWO PEOPLE WHO ARE STRANDED. AND THIS IS RIGHT NEAR THE WATT AVENUE OVERPASS ON THE AMERICAN RIVER. UM, AND THAT’S WHERE A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE TO GO TO COOL OFF. AND YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THOSE FOLKS THERE LOOKS LIKE THOSE ARE MAYBE THE RESCUERS THAT ARE COMING OVER TO TRY AND GET THOSE FOLKS OUT OF THAT TREE. IT LOOKS LIKE THOSE COULD BE FIRST RESPONDERS THAT WE’RE SEEING THAT ARE KIND OF SWIMMING ALONG THE SHORELINE. I COUNT THREE, MAYBE FOUR. OBVIOUSLY, THE TREES HERE ARE KIND OF OBSCURING SOME OF OUR VIEW, BUT THOSE DO LOOK LIKE PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING OVER THERE TO RESCUE THOSE FOLKS. CAN’T SAY THAT WITH COMPLETE CERTAINTY, BUT THOSE DO LOOK LIKE, OH, NOW WE HAVE LOOKS LIKE A FIFTH PERSON WITH A ROPE. SO I THINK THE RESCUE IS UNDERWAY, WHICH IS GOOD NEWS. I GUESS WE SHOULD SAY GOOD NEWS. THANK, THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT TREE THAT THAT CAUGHT THESE FOLKS AND AT LEAST KEPT THEM IN A STATIONARY POSITION. SO THAT FIRST RESPONDERS COULD GET OVER THERE. AND ONCE AGAIN, YOU KNOW, JUST A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW OUR FIRST RESPONDERS ARE ON THIS TYPE OF THING. NOT SURE HOW THIS GOT CALLED IN. IF THEY CALLED IN THE PEOPLE ON THAT BOAT THEMSELVES, OR IF SOMEBODY SAW THEM STRUGGLING. BUT THE QUICK, QUICK RESPONSE HERE, THAT’S THAT’S GREAT. SO I’M NOT SURE IF THE BOATERS HERE HAVE LIFE VESTS ON. WE HOPE TO HOPE THEY DO, BECAUSE THAT OBVIOUSLY IS WHAT THESE FIRST RESPONDERS ALWAYS TELLING US WHEN YOU’RE IN THE WATER, NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF LEVEL OF SWIMMING YOU ARE AT, YOU’RE GOING TO WANT THAT. THAT LIFE VEST, FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE CONTINUING TO WATCH THIS AND LOOKS LIKE THEY’VE GOT THEM TETHERED. THEY HAD TO SWIM UPSTREAM THERE TO GET TO THE RAFT WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE KIND OF TANGLED IN THAT TREE. THERE’S A LOT OF TREES ALONG THE AMERICAN RIVER. IF YOU’VE EVER TRIED TO INNERTUBE DOWN IT, YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OBSTACLES. AND IF YOU GET GET CAUGHT IN ONE OF THOSE THINGS, IT CAN BE PRETTY PROBLEMATIC. THEY’VE GOT TWO OF THOSE OTHER RAFTS THERE. THE BOATS THERE FROM THE, UM, FROM THE EMERGENCY PERSONNEL THAT ARE THERE TO KIND OF BE READY TO TRY AND CATCH THEM ONCE THEY GET DISLODGED FROM THAT TREE, WHICH IS KIND OF BLOCKING OUR VIEW RIGHT NOW. BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT TREE THAT THEY HAD TO SWIM AROUND. THAT’S UNDERWATER. AND THAT’S ONE OF THE BIG DANGERS. TY OF THE AMERICAN RIVER, NOT JUST THE AMERICAN RIVER, ALSO THE SACRAMENTO RIVER, BUT ESPECIALLY THE THE AMERICAN RIVER. UM, BECAUSE THOSE THINGS CAN REALLY HURT IF YOU GO OVER THEM OR YOU CAN GET TANGLED IN THEM BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE HOW CLOSE IT IS IN DIFFERENT SPOTS. IT’S JUST REALLY UNEVEN. LOOK WHAT’S RIGHT AHEAD OF THAT TREE LINE. WE KIND OF JUST WENT PAST IT WITH OUR VIEW, BUT IT’S LIKE THAT ALMOST MAKESHIFT. LOOKS LIKE A DAM WAS FORMING, ALMOST OF TREES AND PROBABLY SOME ROCKS. I MEAN, THEY COULD HAVE HIT SOMETHING LIKE THAT TOO. AND NO TELLING WHAT THAT COULD DO TO A RAFT. AND AGAIN, WE DON’T KNOW IF THEY HAVE LIFE VESTS, BUT IF THEY WERE TO HIT THAT, I MEAN, THAT RIGHT THERE COULD CAUSE A LOT OF DAMAGE TO A RAFT AND EASILY, EASILY POP WHAT THOSE FOLKS ARE PROBABLY ON RIGHT NOW. SO IT IS IT IS REALLY COOL TO SEE THE FIRST RESPONDERS OUT HERE DOING WHAT THEY DO. I THINK THERE’S ABOUT FIVE OF THEM OUT THERE. OBVIOUSLY, STANDING ALONG THE THE SHORELINE HERE, RIGHT CLOSE TO THE RIPARIAN ZONE WHERE IT GOES OFF INTO THE RIVER BANK THERE. AND WE STILL CAN’T SEE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE BEING RESCUED BECAUSE OF THE TREES IN THE WAY OF THEM. BUT AS WE’RE ZOOMING IN HERE AND KIND OF JUST LOOKING AT, WE CAN SEE, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE BIT OF BLUE, I’M ASSUMING THAT’S PART OF THEIR RAFT. THAT’S WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE THROUGH THE TREES. NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT THEY WERE WERE FLOATING ON, BUT YEAH, IT’S GOT TO BE A VERY STRESSFUL TIME FOR THOSE FOLKS, BUT ALSO PRETTY RELIEVING. NOW, THAT FIRST RESPONDERS ARE THERE. WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THEIR HEARTS ARE FEELING PRETTY RELIEVED RIGHT NOW WITH WITH THE HELP ON THE WAY. I CAN’T TELL IF THAT RAFT IS LIKE FLIPPED A CERTAIN WAY, OR IF THAT’S EVEN A RAFT. I MEAN, IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING ELSE. I THINK IT’S ONE OF THOSE BIG FLOTATION RAFTS THAT KIND OF HAS SEATS, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S UPSIDE DOWN. SO PEOPLE SIT IN IT AND THEY FACE EACH OTHER. BUT WHAT’S A LITTLE CONCERNING IS YOU CAN SEE LITTLE SPLASHES OF ORANGE AND THOSE COULD BE LIFE JACKETS. THERE WAS ONE THAT WAS TANGLED UP ON THE UPPER RIGHT. THERE YOU GO. WELL, NO, THERE WAS ANOTHER ONE. NOT THAT ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT’S ACTUALLY ON SOMEONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE GETTING SOMEBODY OUT OF THE WATER RIGHT NOW, WHICH IS GREAT. BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER ORANGE LIFE JACKET TO THE LEFT OF THIS THAT THAT WE ZOOMED IN ON FOR JUST A SECOND. I DON’T KNOW IF DAN OPPENHEIMER PILOT CAN TALK WITH US ABOUT IT, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THERE’S A LIFE JACKET THAT’S JUST KIND OF FLOATING IN THE WATER THAT’S ATTACHED TO THAT TREE THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT. WAY OVER TO THE LEFT. I DON’T KNOW IF DAN CAN TALK WITH US RIGHT NOW, SO THAT WOULD MEAN MAYBE SOMEONE HAD THAT ON OR HAD THAT NEAR THEM AND IT CAME OFF OR YOU KNOW, IT’S HARD TO KNOW IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THAT SECURED. BUT IT DOES LOOK LIKE THEY WERE ABLE TO GET ONE PERSON OUT. I THINK THAT’S WHAT WE WERE SEEING. IT’S STILL OVER TO THE LEFT A LITTLE BIT. IT’S BRIGHT ORANGE, BUT THEY HAVE AT LEAST SIX PEOPLE DOWN THERE. IN ALL, I COUNTED ABOUT SIX PEOPLE THAT ARE THERE BECAUSE THEY’VE GOT MORE PEOPLE UP ON THE BANK. SURE. BUT I MEAN, THIS IS JUST A GOOD WARNING FOR EVERYONE, EVEN HERE WE GO. HERE’S ONE. THERE’S ANOTHER PERSON IN A LIFE JACKET THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY THAT’S BEING RESCUED. RIGHT. UM, ONE OF THE ONE OF THE TWO PEOPLE ON THIS RAFT. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT A RAFT THAT SIZE, LISA, IT MAKES YOU THINK USUALLY TWO PEOPLE WOULDN’T BE ON A RAFT. THAT SIZE. I HOPE THAT THERE IS NOT OTHER FOLKS THAT EITHER GOT OFF THE BOAT EARLIER OR IN DANGER SOMEWHERE ELSE. I MEAN, JUST BASED ON THE BODY LANGUAGE OF THE PERSON WHO WAS JUST RESCUED. IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THERE IS OTHER FOLKS THAT ARE THAT ARE IN DANGER SOMEWHERE ELSE. IT LOOKS LIKE HE’S PRETTY CALM RIGHT NOW, OBVIOUSLY VERY RELIEVED TO BE GETTING TO THE SHORELINE WITH THE FIRST RESPONDERS WHO WILL NOW CHECK HIM OUT, MAKE SURE THAT HE’S OKAY, AND HE IS WEARING A LIFE VEST, WHICH OF COURSE, WE PREACH THAT HERE AT KCRA, EVERY NEWS AGENCY FROM HERE ACROSS THE COUNTRY TALKS ABOUT ALWAYS WEARING A LIFE VEST, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE IN A BIG GIANT BODY OF WATER, LIKE LIKE THE SACRAMENTO RIVER HERE. YEAH, BUT WE DON’T KNOW IF THEY JUST GAVE THAT TO HIM RIGHT NOW. LET’S SEE. THEY’RE CARRYING HIM DOWN THERE TO. YOU’RE RIGHT. UM, EITHER WAY, IT’S IT’S OBVIOUSLY THAT’S THE FIRST THING THEY DO IS THEY PUT THE LIFE JACKET ON THEM AND THEN THEY TRY AND GET THEM OUT ONE BY ONE. IT LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS A FREE LIFE JACKET. THAT WAS KIND OF TANGLED UP IN THAT ONE TREE. BUT WE DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE ON THIS RAFT. AND WE’RE GOING TO HOPE TO GET MORE INFORMATION. THAT INFORMATION. THERE’S THE RAFT, THERE’S THE RAFT GOING. IT GOT DISLODGED. AND SO THAT’S MAKING ITS WAY RIGHT THERE ABOVE THE M C THAT OTHER LIFE JACKET RIGHT THERE. SEE THAT? THAT’S THE ONE I WAS TALKING ABOUT. SO MAYBE THEY JUST HAD SOME LIFE JACKETS AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT RAFT. JUST RUNNING INTO THAT LITTLE BARGE AREA THERE. I MEAN, THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED WITH THOSE FOLKS ON IT. SO. WELL, I THINK PEOPLE BUY CERTAIN RAFTS AND MAYBE THEY GET IT OUT OF, YOU KNOW, A GROCERY STORE OR A DRUGSTORE, BUT THEY’RE NOT REAL RAFT QUALITY. THEY’RE NOT GOOD RIVER QUALITY RAFTS. NO, THEY’RE FINE. IF YOU WANT TO GO IN A BIG POOL, MAYBE A VERY CALM LAKE. YEAH, BUT THE AMERICAN RIVER, THE SACRAMENTO RIVER. UM, YEAH. NO. WELL, THEY’RE NOT GOOD. THEY’RE NOT GOING TO LAST THROUGH THAT. YOU NEED THE PROFESSIONAL GRADE RAFTS. GOOD NEWS IS THESE THESE FOLKS, AT LEAST IN THIS IMMEDIATE AREA, ARE FINE. WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS AND WATCH THIS AND GET YOU ANY NEW DETAIL

Sister station KCRA's LiveCopter 3 showed multiple first responders swimming to aid the men stuck in the tree line. An inflatable raft appeared to be stuck on some branches."He was tired. The raft was all caught up. It was just easier to call 911," said Buckley. You know, the greatest fear is losing life," said Bennet. The two men said they were wearing life jackets when the raft crashed. LiveCopter 3 showed one of those life jackets further downstream. The fire department said both men were rescued and are safe. Both men now want to give a warning to those wanting to cool off in the river. "Keep your life lifejackets on. Stay where it's calm and stay out of the roughness. Watch out for trees and never go fishing in a rubber raft," said Buckley. No one was severely injured in the incident.
