Jefferson Parish deputy fires shots while investigating chase, stolen car in Metairie
DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT AN INCIDENT WHERE DEPUTIES OPENED FIRE AT A STOLEN CAR RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY METAIRIE PARKING LOT YESTERDAY. WELL, TODAY WE HAVE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUSPECTS INVOLVED. YEAH. WDSU REPORTER BRITTNEY VERNER IS LIVE OUTSIDE OF CLEARVIEW MALL AND BRITTANY. THIS HAPPENED AT THE HEIGHT OF RUSH HOUR WITH MANY PEOPLE AROUND. YES, A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE IT WAS A LOT OF CARS OUT HERE, A LOT OF SHOPPERS. IF YOU LOOK BEHIND ME, YOU CAN SEE IT’S A LOT OF TRAFFIC HERE. IT WAS PROBABLY EVEN BUSIER YESTERDAY BECAUSE AGAIN, IT WAS AT THREE IN THE AFTERNOON. THIS ALL STARTED THOUGH IN THE PARKING LOT HERE AT THE SLIDERS RESTAURANT. THAT’S WHERE DEPUTIES LOCATED THAT STOLEN VEHICLE. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT SHOPPERS ARE STILL LEFT CONCERNED. THIS IS AN AREA I’VE ALWAYS I WOULD NEVER REALLY EXPECT CRIME TO BE HAPPENING AROUND HERE. SHOCKED. I MEAN, IT’S GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER. IT’S GETTING DANGEROUS. SHOPPERS AT CLEARVIEW CENTER ARE IN DISBELIEF ABOUT THE POLICE CHASE THAT STARTED OUT IN THIS PARKING LOT. IT’S HARD. IT’S IT’S HARD TO BE A COP IN THIS CITY. IT’S REALLY HARD. JEFFERSON PARISH DEPUTIES SAY THEY SPOTTED A STOLEN VEHICLE IN THE DRIVE THRU OF THE SMALL SLIDERS RESTAURANT MONDAY AFTERNOON. THEY STOPPED THAT CAR AND ARRESTED 17 YEAR OLD AALIYAH LEWIS. AND DEPUTIES SAY THAT’S WHEN THEY OPENED FIRE ON THE DRIVER, 27 YEAR OLD KENDRICK CONSTANTINE, WHO DROVE OFF AND LED POLICE ON A CHASE. YOU KNOW, HE’S SHOOTING. COULD HE HIT SOMEBODY INNOCENT OUT HERE? I DON’T LIKE THE THOUGHT OF COPS. JUST SHOOTING. AND ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND AND I THINK THEY NEED BEFORE THEY PULL THOSE GUNS, THEY REALLY NEED TO SEE, YOU KNOW, WHAT’S GOING ON. IT’S UNCLEAR WHAT CAUSED THAT SHOOTING, BUT THAT CHASE ENDED WITH CONSTANTINE CRASHING. THE CAUSEWAY IN 26TH STREET AROUND THREE MILES AWAY. HE THEN RAN, BUT EVENTUALLY GOT CAUGHT. HE’S NOW FACING SEVERAL CHARGES, INCLUDING AGGRAVATED FLIGHT FROM AN OFFICER, ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY AND POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A PERSON UNDER PROTECTIVE ORDER, TO NAME A FEW. THE PASSENGER, AALIYAH LEWIS, ALSO FACING CHARGES INCLUDING RESISTING AN OFFICER, MANY SHOPPERS ARE NOW ON EDGE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW THIS VIOLENT INCIDENT UNFOLDED. I LIVE UPTOWN, BUT WHEN I COME OUT HERE, I ALWAYS EXPECT IT TO BE RATHER SAFE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. YES, AND SHOTS BEING FIRED. IT’S VERY CONCERNING TO ME. YEAH. AGAIN, DEPUTIES SAY THAT DRIVER NEVER FIRED HIS WEAPON AT THE DEPUTIES. SO THE QUESTION REMAINS, WHAT CAUSED THE DEPUTY TO FIRE AT THAT DRIVER? THAT’S SOMETHING THAT WE’RE WORKING TO GET ANSWERED. AND THAT’S ALSO SOMETHING THAT DETECTIVES ARE INVESTIGATING. AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE REVEALED IN THEIR INVESTIGATION. LIVE I
