Louisiana new laws take effect today. Here is what you need to know
Starting Thursday new laws signed by Gov. Jeff Landry are taking effect.
One of those laws that goes into effect makes it illegal to knowingly approach an arresting police officer. Another law is banning the sale of THC products at gas stations.
The first law stipulates that individuals who intentionally approach an officer engaged in their duties, after being ordered to stop or retreat, could face a $500 fine, 60 days in jail, or both.
The second law restricts the sale of THC products to stores carrying hemp and medical marijuana, excluding gas stations.
Additional laws are set to take effect throughout the week.
Below is a list of some of the more notable new laws taking effect:
SB 152: PERMITLESS CONCEALED CARRY in New Orleans (already in effect statewide) — Provides relative to the right of law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns lawfully without a permit.
SB24 CRIMINAL RECORDS: Removes certain limitations on the release and dissemination of mug shots.
HB322 STUDENT/DISCIPLINE: Provides relative to student discipline
HB428 INSURANCE/PROPERTY: Provides relative to the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation
HB128 WEAPONS/FIREARMS: Provides relative to possession of a firearm by a felon
HB174 HIGHER EDUCATION: Provides relative to disciplinary proceedings for students and student organizations at public post-secondary education institutions
HB453 JUVENILES: Eliminates the statute of limitations to prosecute the crime of molestation of a juvenile
HB122 CURRICULA: Provides relative to discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools
HB121 EDUCATION: Provides relative to the use of certain names and pronouns for students
HB46 VACCINES/VACCINATION: Provides that no person shall be required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of enrollment or attendance at any public or nonpublic school
SB124 CRIMINAL JUSTICE: Creates the Sexual Assault Survivor's Bill of Rights
HB225 DISTRICTS/CRIME PREVENT: Creates the Tall Timbers Crime Prevention and Improvement District in New Orleans
HB252 EDUCATION: Provides relative to the provision of cardiac health information to student-athletes and their parents
HB270 ASSESSORS: Provides relative to the application and fee required by the Orleans Parish assessor for a tax exemption
HB424 SCHOOLS: Requires each public school governing authority to use a uniform 10-point grading scale
HB432 MTR VEHICLE/LICENSE PLATES: Creates the "LSU Baseball National Champions" specialty license plate
HB578 CORRECTIONS: Creates the Back on Track Youth Pilot Program
HB608 CIVIL/LAW: Creates the Women's Safety and Protection Act
HB688 LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Provides relative to training requirements for local government officials
HB392 MEDICAID: Provides relative to Medicaid and private insurance coverage for perimenopausal and menopausal care
HB107 STUDENT/DISCIPLINE: Prohibits certain types of discipline of students in elementary and secondary schools
HB824 CRIMINAL/PENALTIES: Provides relative to penalties for the unlawful disruption of the operation of a school

HB816 CRIME: Provides relative to residential contractor fraud
HB674 MOTOR VEHICLES: Authorizes a local governing authority to adopt ordinances to address blighted property with purported collector's automobiles
HB644 STUDENTS: Authorizes students enrolled in home study programs to participate in public school activities
HB575 DISTRICTS/COMMUNICATIONS: Provides relative to the membership of the Orleans Parish Communications District
