OF SCHOOL FOR NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IN JUST A FEW HOURS, THE DOORS FOR THE NEW LEAH CHASE SCHOOL FINALLY OPEN. OH, I’M EXCITED. IT’S GOING TO BE THE ONLY DISTRICT GRAND SCHOOL IN NEARLY TWO DECADES. WDSU REPORTER SIDDIQUI IS LIVE WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT AS THE EXCITEMENT BUILDS AHEAD OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR. GOOD MORNING. GOOD MORNING GUYS, AND GOOD MORNING, SUPERINTENDENT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. ABSOLUTELY. GOOD MORNING TO YOU. AND WE’RE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CLASSROOMS. LOOK, YOUR TEACHERS DID A GOOD JOB. THIS IS IMPRESSIVE. YEAH. SO THIS IS ONE OF OUR THIRD GRADE CLASSROOMS. AND YES OUR TEACHERS HAVE BEEN BUSY MAKING SURE THAT THEY’RE READY FOR OUR SCHOLARS WHO WILL BE HERE SHORTLY. YOU KNOW, WHILE WE’RE TALKING, THE KIDDOS AND THE PARENTS AT HOME ARE PROBABLY WATCHING US GETTING THEIR NEW SCHOOL SHOES ON, AND ALL OF THAT. TELL ME, WHAT DOES THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL LOOK LIKE? YEAH. SO TEACHERS WILL SPEND A GOOD BIT OF THEIR TIME THIS WEEK GETTING TO KNOW THEIR SCHOLARS AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY’RE BUILDING THE RAPPORT AND THE RELATIONSHIPS AND REALLY FINDING OUT WHAT OUR SCHOLARS NEED. YOU KNOW, I’M REALLY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY, AND ESPECIALLY AS WE GET TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR SCHOLARS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND DEVELOP PARTNERSHIPS WITH THEM. AND THE BIG MESSAGE IS THAT THIS IS THE LEAH CHASE SCHOOL. SO HOW WILL THE CHASE FAMILY BE HONORED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR? YEAH. SO WE REALLY ARE EXCITED ABOUT WORKING WITH THE CHASE FAMILY, AND THEY’VE BEEN GREAT IN TERMS OF HELPING US TO BE SURE THAT THIS SCHOOL TRULY DOES HONOR THE THE LEGACY OF LEAH CHASE. AND YOU KNOW, WE’LL BE TOUCHING BASE WITH THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS. AND THEY’RE EXCITED ABOUT OUR EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT WE’RE IMPROVING ACADEMIC OUTCOMES. YOU KNOW, AS MUCH AS WE KNOW THAT LEAH CHASE LOVED ARTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, WE ALSO KNOW THAT EDUCATION WAS REALLY THE FOUNDATION. WHAT SHE FOR, WHAT SHE BELIEVED MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN LIVES. Tuesday marks a historic day for New Orleans Public Schools. The doors for the new Leah Chase school are finally open.The school is now the first district-run school in nearly two decades. Superintendent Avis Williams says enrollment is currently at 280 students, with a max goal of 320 students. Williams says she is adding more staff in order to meet enrollment. “We're here to provide families with another top-notch choice for education within a neighborhood school setting,” said Avis Williams, the superintendent of NOLA Public Schools. “With a laser focus on rigorous standards-aligned instruction, differentiation, and student engagement, we're confident the school will make a profound impact on its scholars and the entire community.”The school opened as K-fifth but later hopes to expand to eighth grade.
