Local experts share back-to-school tips for students with autism
WDSU NEWS ANUM. THANK YOU. AND GETTING BACK INTO A CLASSROOM ROUTINE CAN BE DIFFICULT FOR ANY CHILD, BUT EXPERTS SAY IT IS EVEN MORE CHALLENGING FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM. AND THAT IS WHY BEHAVIOR SPECIALISTS AT GULF SOUTH AUTISM CENTER SAY NOW IS THE TIME TO GET BACK INTO ROUTINE. SOME TIPS ARE TO INTRODUCE YOUR CHILD TO TEACHERS AND CLASSROOMS BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. THAT’S ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IF YOUR CHILD IS ATTENDING A NEW SCHOOL, BECAUSE EXPERTS SAY THAT CAN TRIGGER STRESS. THEN THERE ARE SIGNS PARENTS CAN BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR AS SCHOOL BEGINS HAVING DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIORS OR WITHDRAWING FROM THEIR EMOTIONS A BIT. KIND OF STAYING QUIET, NOT BEING ABLE TO FOLLOW GROUP INSTRUCTIONS AND THE TEACHER NOTICING, UM, THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT COMPARED TO THE OTHER PEERS IN THE CLASSROOM. Experts say getting back to the classroom can be difficult for any child but even more challenging for children with autism.Board Certified Behavior Analyst at GulfSouth Autism recommends getting back into the school routine as soon as you can.GulfSouth Autism provides the following tips for families:Introduce your child to teachers and classrooms before the first day of schoolKnow children with autism drive off routine and predictabilitySetting up a morning and nighttime routine at least 2-4 weeks before the first day of schoolMeet with school staff to discuss goals and expectationsParents can also track disruptive behavior or emotional withdrawal to determine how their child is reacting to returning to school.
