A man who is accused of a disturbing crime is expected to be booked on attempted murder charges after police said he tried to kill a small child.
It happened Monday afternoon near the corner of Earhart Boulevard and Monroe Street in Hollygrove.
Police and witnesses said the man threw himself into oncoming traffic with a small child in his hands.
“Everyone went outside to see what was going on, and a man came back saying somebody was throwing a baby on a windshield,” Moya Carroll said.
Carroll works in the area and said it was a shared concern for many people who live and work around there after witnessing the aftermath of that man putting himself and a small child in harm’s way. One neighbor who did not want to be identified said it was a chaotic scene.
“When you hear that somebody that’s supposed to be protecting the baby putting the baby in danger—it will blow your mind,” Carroll said.
“Yesterday we heard all the sirens, everyone was freaking out. It was very concerning when we heard that there was a baby involved in it, and for the people that were watching being thrown against the windshield, that’s just so scary,” Carroll said.
Police said 33-year-old Darius Sampson is the man taken into custody following this incident. Documents show he allegedly laid down into oncoming traffic with the small child, then threw himself against a moving car, shattering the windshield.
“It’s the baby that you got to worry about more than anything because they innocent they ain’t got no mind they can’t protect they self."
“I can only imagine if you’re just driving down Earhart and some guy jumped on a windshield with a child. That must be really scary,” Carroll said.
Police arrived and took the small child away while taking Sampson into custody. Now everyone is hoping that the small child is OK.
"It have you thinking like what was going through that person's mind or what was happening at that moment to make them do that."
Sampson could face attempted homicide of a child charges. It’s unclear if he could face any other charges or the health condition of the child.
