TO THE WEEKEND. A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY WITH AUTISM ESCAPED HIS HOME AND ENDED UP IN A POND IN DELTONA. A LOT OF TIMES, THESE STORIES CAN END WITH TRAGEDY, BUT FORTUNATELY, THAT LITTLE BOY WAS FOUND SAFELY AND PULLED OUT. THIS ALL HAPPENED LAST NIGHT, JUST A FEW BLOCKS FROM HIS HOME, AND TONIGHT, WESH 2 SPENCER TRACY SPEAKS WITH THE DEPUTY WHO FOUND THE LITTLE BOY AND BROUGHT HIM BACK HOME. FRANTIC MOMENTS FOR A FATHER IN DELTONA. HIS FIVE YEAR OLD SON WITH AUTISM GOT OUT OF THEIR HOME TUESDAY NIGHT. THE DAD CALLED 911 WHEN HE COULDN’T FIND HIM. HE SAYS HIS SON GOT OUT OF THEIR HOME THROUGH A SECOND STORY DOOR. THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME THE BOY HAS MANAGED TO GET OUTSIDE, SO THE FAMILY HAS PRECAUTIONS IN PLACE. THAT’S HOW THEY KNEW HE GOT OUT, BECAUSE AN ALARM WENT OFF. VOLUSIA SHERIFF’S DEPUTY WES BRUFF STARTED CHECKING NEARBY BODIES OF WATER. COCO. HEY, HE’S OUT HERE SOMEWHERE. HEY, I GOT HIM, I GOT HIM. I THINK HE MIGHT HAVE NOTICED ME AND MADE A NOISE TO GET MY ATTENTION. I LOOKED BACK AND HE WAS HOLDING ON TO A DEAD TREE STUMP THAT WAS BARELY STICKING OUT OF THE WATER. HIS INSTINCTS KICKED INTO ACTION AS HE SPOTTED THE BOY. YOU GOT HIM? YOU GOT HIM, DEPUTY BRUFF CARRIED THE BOY OUT OF THE WATER AND SAFELY TO SHORE. HE SAYS HIS TIMING WAS EVERYTHING. AS THE TREE STUMP BROKE IN HALF THAT THE BOY WAS HOLDING. I THANK GOD A LOT FOR PUTTING ME IN THAT POSITION. ONE AND TWO FOR ALLOWING THAT KID TO BE ABOVE WATER AND AND BREATHING FINE. WHEN WE GOT THERE, DEPUTY BRUFF SAYS WITH HIS AUTISTIC AWARENESS TRAINING, HE HAD AN IDEA OF WHERE THE BOY COULD BE. I KNOW THAT AUTISTIC CHILDREN ARE PRONE TO TO WATER AND THEY SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT HE LIKES WATER A LOT. AS A FATHER HIMSELF, YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR PARENTS. DEPUTY BRUFF SAYS THIS RESCUE REALLY HIT HOME FOR HIM TO HAVE HIM HOLD ON TO ME TIGHTLY LIKE THAT, IT REALLY FELT LIKE IT WAS MY OWN KID HOLDING ON TO ME. THE LITTLE BOY IS NOW SAFE AND SOUND BACK A

A deputy in Volusia County, Florida, on Tuesday night, ran into a large pond to find a 5-year-old boy with autism who had wandered away from his home. Deputy Wes Brough was able to find and rescue the child from the pond in Deltona, Florida, which is around 31 miles from Orlando.It happened around 7:30 p.m. The boy's father told deputies his son escaped the house through a second-story door, which set off an alarm. The family immediately began looking, asked neighbors for help, and called 911.Deputies searched the house and around the home with no luck. Knowing that the child was attracted to water, deputies began checking bodies of water near the neighborhood. Around 7:48 p.m., the sheriff's office said Brough heard a voice and spotted the boy out in the water, hanging onto a log. "He started making noises to get my attention, and he was holding onto a dead tree stump that was barely sticking out of the water," said Deputy Brough. Brough jumped into the pond and carried the boy to dry land, where he was medically cleared and returned to his family."I thank God a lot for putting me in that position and for allowing that kid to be above water. He was breathing fine when we got there," said Deputy Brough. "A part of that training we learned that children with autism have an attraction to water, or shiny things. Deputy Brough used that training, and used the information given by the boy's family," said Sheriff Chitwood. "I knew that autistic children are prone to water, and the boy's family specifically said he liked water," said Deputy Brough. Deputy Brough says, as a father of three, this rescue really hit home for him. "To have him hold on tightly to me, it felt like it was my own kid holding on to me," he said.The sheriff's office said it confirmed the family had taken several measures to secure the house, including the alarm on the door that immediately alerted them the boy had gone missing.It comes after similar situations in Orlando recently. In both situations, the young children were found dead in bodies of water.
