Video shows Florida deputy rescue missing 5-year-old from large pond
A deputy in Volusia County, Florida, on Tuesday night, ran into a large pond to find a 5-year-old boy with autism who had wandered away from his home.
Deputy Wes Brough was able to find and rescue the child from the pond in Deltona, Florida, which is around 31 miles from Orlando.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. The boy's father told deputies his son escaped the house through a second-story door, which set off an alarm. The family immediately began looking, asked neighbors for help, and called 911.
Deputies searched the house and around the home with no luck. Knowing that the child was attracted to water, deputies began checking bodies of water near the neighborhood.
Around 7:48 p.m., the sheriff's office said Brough heard a voice and spotted the boy out in the water, hanging onto a log.
"He started making noises to get my attention, and he was holding onto a dead tree stump that was barely sticking out of the water," said Deputy Brough.
Brough jumped into the pond and carried the boy to dry land, where he was medically cleared and returned to his family.
"I thank God a lot for putting me in that position and for allowing that kid to be above water. He was breathing fine when we got there," said Deputy Brough.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood says his department prepares for situations like this with their yearly autism awareness training.
"A part of that training we learned that children with autism have an attraction to water, or shiny things. Deputy Brough used that training, and used the information given by the boy's family," said Sheriff Chitwood.
"I knew that autistic children are prone to water, and the boy's family specifically said he liked water," said Deputy Brough.
Deputy Brough says, as a father of three, this rescue really hit home for him.
"To have him hold on tightly to me, it felt like it was my own kid holding on to me," he said.
The sheriff's office said it confirmed the family had taken several measures to secure the house, including the alarm on the door that immediately alerted them the boy had gone missing.
It comes after similar situations in Orlando recently. In both situations, the young children were found dead in bodies of water.
