A mother details her grief a week after her son was shot and killed outside of a popular 8th Ward bar. The shooting happened in the 3100 block of St. Roch Avenue.
So far, the suspect has yet to be found.
Brandon Hayward, 32, had just parked in the neutral ground area along St. Roch Saturday morning around 12a. Witnesses said he was about to head inside a nearby nightclub for a birthday party when he stopped to greet a friend.
Charlotte Hayward, Hayward's mom, said, "Apparently, the guy she was with in her passenger seat was offended. They are saying the way my son looked at him, he didn't appreciate it."
Witnesses told Hayward's mom the two got into an altercation in the area.
"They tussled. Then, Brandon turns to go away. The guy goes to get a gun and shoots him in the back," Charlotte Hayward said.
Witnesses said Hayward died on scene as New Orleans police rushed to respond. Charlotte Hayward said that days later, her other children, including Brandon's twin brother, who was his best friend, were still trying to come to grips.
"This is devastating but questioning because we are thinking there's something more behind this by what we have gathered so far," said the grieving mother.
WDSU was told Brandon was also a musician and had been working alongside his twin brother laying concrete for more than a decade.
Brandon's mom said he was also the perfectionist and optimist of the family, helping out with her catering business. They would vend during second lines in the downtown area.
As NOPD works to make an arrest to provide more information to the family on what happened that night, Brandon's mom had a message for the person responsible for the crime that cut her son's life short, forever changing the course of her family's life.
"You want to fight. You can throw hands. That would have been a lot better than this. You throw your life away by taking this bright light from us. It's unfortunate because on both sides, we lose," Charlotte said.
Hayward was also known for his style. His family has since decided to preserve his hats, and give to people whose lives Brandon touched with the phrase, "Phatz was here."
They are planning to do more with the brand in the near future in keeping Brandon's legacy alive.
As of right now no arrests have been made. If you know anything that could lead to an arrest, call Crime Stoppers at 504-822-1111.
