PATCH IS A SWORN OFFICER WHO YOU MIGHT SPOT ON THE PARADE ROUTE OR AT OTHER EVENTS. HIS NAME IS A PLAY ON EYE PATCH BECAUSE HE WAS BORN WITH JUST ONE EYE. NOW, KIRKPATRICK SAYS SHE HOPES HE WILL SERVE AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE POLICE AND EVERYDAY PEOPLE. YOU KNOW, BECAUSE HE IS A PEACEFUL ANIMAL, HE IS A COMFORT. WE REALLY ARE PEACE KEEPERS. WE ARE PEACE OFFICERS AND MY HEART’S DESIRE, AS I’VE SHARED WITH ANYONE, IS TO BE A PEACEMAKER IN THIS CITY. AND SO PATCH IS JUST PERFECT IN THAT ROLE. The New Orleans Police Department has a new, four-legged officer. Patch is a miniature horse who was sworn in by Mayor LaToya Cantrell in recent months.Patch's name is a play on "eye-patch." The 16-year-old horse was born without an eye.NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick brought Patch to the WDSU studio to talk about his role within the department."He is a peaceful animal. He is a comfort, and we really are peacekeepers," Kirkpatrick said. "We are peace officers and my heart's desire, as I've shared ... is to be a peacemaker in this city, and so Patch is just perfect in that role."Kirkpatrick and Patch both celebrated their first Mardi Gras in 2024. She said the mini horse will continue to make public appearances in an effort to bridge the gap between the police officers and everyday people.Patch is also active on social media.
