New Orleans woman who pled guilty in deadly America Street fire sentenced to prison
A woman who pleaded guilty to helping her boyfriend after he set a deadly house fire that killed his three children last year was sentenced Thursday.
Shanyka Phillips withdrew her not-guilty plea on Monday and then pleaded guilty to two counts of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
While the family read victim impact statements, a woman entered the courtroom and attacked Phillips, forcing her sentencing to be delayed.
The family was supposed to join the court hearing by Zoom Thursday, but did not attend.
On Thursday, Phillips was sentenced to four years of prison for both counts she was facing.
The judge said the sentences will run concurrently.
Phillips was the girlfriend of Joseph Washington.
Washington was recently convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the case.
He admitted to killing his three children in the house fire in October 2023.
