S&WB provides update on employee injured responding to power outage that caused boil advisory
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans provided the New Orleans City Council Joint Utilities Committee an update Thursday on the nearly citywide boil water advisory that happened last week.
The utility also provided an update on the employee who was injured responding to the outage.
According to the S&WB, the employee was injured at the Claiborne Pumping Station when a pressure change within the system caused clearwell hatch to become airborne, severely injuring the employee.
The employee was severely injured and is still in the hospital.
According to the S&WB, additional safety measures have been made in the clearwell area to prevent pressure buildup in the future.
The utility is also updating its standard operating procedures for communication during boil water advisories.
The S&WB also said it would streamline intergovernmental communications, and have a new customer portal using Smart Metering data under development that in the future will offer more immediate alerts.
“We recognize the inconvenience and impact to businesses this event caused our customers and visitors,” said Ghassan Korban, the SWBNO executive director, in an issued statement. “We are taking every necessary precaution to prevent future incidents of this nature. We stand by the life-saving decisions made by our fellow employees, who followed appropriate protocols and returned the pumps back to service, all while supporting their critically injured coworker.”
