Tulane giving away free COVID-19 prevention kits for cancer patients
Tulane Cancer Center is giving away free COVID-19 prevention kits for residents with cancer.
Louisiana is reporting an increase in COVID cases linked to the new variant called FLiRT.
Dr. Michale Hoerger, a Tulane Cancer Center member and associate professor, is leading a project called COVI-CAN.
The project provides a free kit that includes masks, rapid tests, and air purifiers to those with cancer.
The program aims to gather data on the kit and is funded by the American Cancer Society and Tulane University’s Lavin Bernick program.
The kit includes:
• An educational booklet with updated COVID-related information for patients and families dealing with cancer.
• Fifty high-quality masks, N95 or similar grade, for the patient and family members, based on prior needs and experience as well as what would be helpful. Recipients are surveyed about their knowledge of proper mask usage and fitting.
• Five COVID rapid tests to detect infection among family members and themselves.
• Two air purifiers to ensure clean air for patient, especially if transmission happens at home.
Those interested in the kits have to fill out a survey and will be surveyed throughout the program.
Cancer patients wanting to obtain a kit can email Hoerger at mhoerger@tulane.edu or call 504-544-9001.
