A beloved Louisiana blues singer has died at age 76. Luther Kent, a New Orleans native, had just celebrated a birthday in June, according to a Facebook post by the Louisiana Jukebox Cafe. Kent was a staple at Jazz Fest, but his performances have been limited in recent years. He was born in New Orleans but lived most of his life in Baton Rouge. According to Kent's website, he signed with Montel Records and began singing professionally at the age of 14. His biography states that he was the lead singer of "Cold Grits" before going solo in 1976. In 1978, Luther teamed up with former musical director for Wayne Cochran, Charlie Brent. They formed a large New Orleans horn band which became known as "Luther Kent & Trick Bag," according to his website. Louisiana Jukebox Cafe said in 1987, Luther teamed up with Dr. John for “Here Comes The Saints" and would sing during timeouts from a sideline stage during the “Who Dat” days at the Superdome.Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time.
