City leaders said New Orleans is now a safer place. New reports show violent crimes, including murders and armed robberies, are way down.
The city's top leaders attribute this good news to more boots on the ground and more resources and money allocated toward NOPD.
Louisiana State Police Troop NOLA initiative has also helped with arrests and guns taken off the street.
Officials said this decline did not happen overnight.
Murders have decreased by almost 40% from this same time last year.
Another big drop is the amount of juvenile murders in the city. Officials said we have experienced more than a 70% drop in juvenile murders. Chief Anne Kirkpatrick attributed this to proactive policing.
"We don't talk about juvenile violence. But when a young person is murdered, like the 15-year-old the other week, it's just so tragic. But we are reducing those deaths. Anyone is too many," Kirkpatrick said.
Another big stat NOPD shared was the increase in NOPD's solve rate. The solve rate is 65%.
In New Orleans East, the biggest area of the city, the rates are also lower. For instance, murders in that area alone are down 37%. Attempted murder is down 100%. Aggravated battery is down 24%.
The councilman of the area, Oliver Thomas said, "We are the largest African-American municipal district in the state. It would be the sixth or seventh largest city if it stood alone. I would hope you begin to tell the story about the community and it's successes."
Agencies like Louisiana State Police-led Troop NOLA are also making a lot of arrests and getting guns off the streets.
The hope is to continue this downward trend all the way up to Super Bowl 2025.
