SO HERE ARE THE FINAL NUMBERS THIS YEAR FROM NOAA. AND YEAH IT’S NOT LOOKING TOO GOOD. BETWEEN 17 TO 25 NAME STORMS. THAT IS THE FORECAST FOR THIS YEAR. KEEP IN MIND THE AVERAGE NAME STORMS FOR THE ATLANTIC IS 14 SEVEN. HURRICANES IS THE AVERAGE FOR THE ATLANTIC, BUT NOAA IS CALLING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 8 TO 13. A NUMBER OF HURRICANES AND MAJOR HURRICANES. WE USUALLY AVERAGE AROUND THREE. HOWEVER, NOAA’S CALLING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 4 TO 7 MAJOR HURRICANES AND, YOU KNOW, ALREADY HERE TODAY, THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER HAS DECLARED THAT WE’RE WATCHING A SYSTEM ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN ATLANTIC, A VERY DISORGANIZED LOOKING SYSTEM. BUT HERE IS THAT AREA OF LOW PRESSURE STAMPED. AND YOU CAN SEE IT’S NOT REALLY LOOKING TOO ORGANIZED. A LOT OF WIND SHEAR HERE, TOO, IN THE ATMOSPHERE, CAUSING THE SHOWERS AND STORMS TO BE BLOWN TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST, AWAY FROM WHAT WOULD BE A CENTER OF CIRCULATION HERE. BUT ANYWAY, IT DOES HAVE A 10% CHANCE TO DEVELOP OVER THE NEXT 2 TO 7 DAYS. SO REALLY NOT EXPECTING A WHOLE LOT, EVEN IF IT DOES DEVELOP INTO A SUBTROPICAL OR TROPICAL SYSTEM, THE THINKING IS IT’S GOING TO MOVE TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST OVER THE OPEN WATERS OF THE ATLANTIC. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR AFTERNOON FORECAST. PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES 88 DEGREES AT 189 AT 3:00. AND BY FIVE MOSTLY SUNNY TEMPERATURES AT AROUND 88 DEGREES. SO ZONE FORECAST TODAY ACROSS THE SOUTH SHORE, MID TO UPPER 80S MIXED CLOUDS AND AFTERNOON SUN. NORTH SHORE HERE TODAY WE’VE GOT HIGH TEMPERATURES INTO THOSE UPPER 80S WITH HIGHS EVEN APPROACHING THE LOW 90S TODAY. FOR AREAS LIKE BOGALUSA AND UP TOWARDS THE HAMMOND AREA HERE THIS AFTERNOON HERE TOO. SO COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR FULL WEATHER FORECAST. I’LL LET YOU KNOW HOW WARM WE’RE TALKING HERE. FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FORECAST HERE, AS WELL AS HIGHS COULD BE NEAR RECORD HIGHS RANDI AND DEREK IN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY. OUR WEATHER TEAM WILL BE BREAKING DOWN THE HURRICANE SEASON OUTLOOK AND GOING IN DEPTH ON WHY IT’S FORECAST TO BE A VERY ACTIVE SEASON. Updated: 12:16 PM CDT May 23, 2024
The official NOAA 2024 hurricane season is out, and it could be a very active season according to the CPC, the Climate Prediction Center.NOAA is forecasting 17-25 named storms, 8-13 hurricanes, and 4-7 major hurricanes.A few of the factors that indicate a very active season is very warm water that has been measured over the Atlantic Basin, and specifically the Main Development Region where water temps are currently as warm as where they'd typically be in August! Also, we're forecast to experience a La Niña this season. This is usually favorable for Caribbean development through the season. And lastly, an active North Africa monsoon season is being forecast which is favorable for the creation of more tropical waves.NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D. says, "With another active hurricane season approaching, NOAA’s commitment to keeping every American informed with life-saving information is unwavering. AI-enabled language translations and a new depiction of inland wind threats in the forecast cone are just two examples of the proactive steps our agency is taking to meet our mission of saving lives and protecting property.” This is an example of what that will look like.Be sure to stay with WDSU First Warning Weather all season long for all your weather information.
