FedEx and UPS could have delivery delays due to tech outage
CAN READ MORE ABOUT THAT ON WMUR. DOT COM. THIS OUTAGE HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS FOR MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. WE ARE JOINED LIVE NOW BY MIKE DRISCOLL WITH FTI COUNSELING. AND MIKE CROWDSTRIKE IS SAYING THAT THIS WAS NOT A CYBER ATTACK OR A SECURITY ISSUE, BUT A SOFTWARE UPDATE ERROR. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT INCIDENTS LIKE THIS? UNFORTUNATELY, IT’S NOT THE FIRST TIME WE’VE SEEN A BROAD OUTAGE LIKE THIS CAUSED BY A SOFTWARE ERROR. IT’S A GOOD LESSON FOR US TO BE PREPARED, AND IT’S ALSO A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW DEPENDENT WE’VE BECOME ON OUR ONLINE ENVIRONMENTS. THIS IS A GREAT LESSON FOR COMPANIES TO HAVE A GOOD PLAN IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH EXACTLY THIS KIND OF OUTAGE. YEAH, MIKE, WE’VE HEARD ABOUT AIRLINES BEING IMPACTED, BANKS OUT THERE. HOW DO COMPANIES PROTECT THEMSELVES IN THE FUTURE FROM THIS HAPPENING AGAIN, AS YOU SAID, THIS IS A WIDE OUTAGE. IT’S A WIDELY USED SOFTWARE PLATFORM AND IT’S BEING FELT AROUND THE WORLD TO PREPARE YOU HAVE TO HAVE BOTH A PLAN FOR DEALING WITH YOUR NETWORK WHEN YOU LOSE ACCESS AND CONTROL AND YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT ANY TIME YOU’RE DEPLOYING A NEW TOOL OR SOFTWARE PATCH, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE. WHAT KIND OF IMPACT MIGHT THAT HAVE BY MANY ORGANIZATIONS? WILL CONDUCT TESTS ON SYSTEMS BEFORE GOING LIVE WITH THEM. YEAH, THE NEED FOR I.T. EMPLOYEES IS LIKE AT A PREMIUM TODAY. YOU KNOW, MIKE, THE OUTAGE ISN’T ONLY AFFECTING BUSINESSES, BUT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. THERE HAVE BEEN NINE, 11 OUTAGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, EVEN BRIEFLY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. THAT HAS BEEN RESOLVED. SHOULD BUSINESSES LOOK DIFFERENTLY AT CYBERSECURITY IN THE FUTURE? I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT THAT IT BE CONSIDERED A PART OF THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION. IT’S NOT JUST THE RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR IT DEPARTMENT. IT HAS TO BE A PLAN FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. THE ORGANIZATION, UTILIZING TOOLS LIKE THE ONES IN QUESTION ARE IMPORTANT, BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY WORK AND HOW THEY AFFECT YOUR NETWORKS. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT CYBERSECURITY BE A PRIMARY THOUGHT FOR ALL BUSINESSES. AND MIKE, AS YOU LOOK INTO YOUR CRYSTAL BALL, IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD GET USED TO IN THE FUTURE? ARE WE GOING TO KEEP HAVING THESE INCIDENCES? COMPUTER OUTAGES LIKE THIS? UNFORTUNATELY, WE’VE SEEN IT BEFORE AND I THINK THE WAY OF LIFE NOW, WE’RE GOING TO SEE THEM IN THE FUTURE. I WOULD ENCOURAGE ORGANIZATIONS, THOUGH, TO TAKE ADVANTAGE AND GET EXPERTS INVOLVED AND HELP PATCHING, HELP REPAIR YOUR SYSTEMS AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOU WILL DEAL WITH IT WHEN IT HAPPENS. NEXT TIME, BECAUSE UNFORTUNATELY, I
