Lafourche Parish government aware of oil spill in Bayou Lafourche
Lafourche Parish government says they are aware of an oil spill in the Bayou Lafourche south of LA Route 182 in Raceland.
Parish President Archie Chaisson says they were notified of the oil release around 7:50 a.m. Saturday.
Officials in Lafourche say the leak was identified inside the Crescent Midstream Crude Oil Facility in Raceland and the cause of the spill is still under investigation.
Crescent Midstream Crude Oil Facility is following approved incident response plan and the source is secured and the oil is contained.
They say the oil is contained and there is no active leak at this time but there is a big response for clean up.
Agencies have been notified, and crews are working to capture what's in the water and a 2,800 feet boom has been deployed.
The parish says an estimate total volume of 820 barrels, 34,440 gallons of oil released.
Residents are being asked to refrain from impending the response efforts from the banks of the bayou.
Lafourche Parish government says at this time drinking is not affected but a water conservation order is in place.
Chaisson issued an emergency declaration which allowed more resources to be deployed support of the incident.
The bayou is closed to mariners from Highway 182 bridge in Raceland to the Salt Water Control Structure in Lockport.
A hotline has been issued for the public to use should any oiled wildlife be discovered in the area. The parish is asking residents to call 832-514-9663.
